Hiring an Alabama Plumber
Alabama requires plumbers and gas fitters to prove their competency before they work. A short check before you hire protects your home.
Request a plumberThe state board
The Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board requires people to demonstrate their competency before they perform, supervise or contract plumbing or gas fitting work.
Look them up
The board's website has a Licensee Search for both individuals and businesses. Ask for the plumber's name or company and check before work starts.
Permits
Larger jobs such as water heater replacements, sewer repairs and new lines may need a permit and inspection. Ask who will arrange it.
Quotes in writing
For anything beyond a small repair, ask for a written quote that lists the work, materials and any permit.
Red flags
Pressure to decide on the spot, requests for full payment upfront and offers to skip a permit are reasons to pause.

Questions to ask
Who will do the work and are they licensed? Is the business insured? How long will the water be off? What warranty covers the labor and any new equipment? A good plumber answers these without hesitation.
Keep the records
Keep the invoice, permit and warranty papers together. Note the brand and model of anything installed. For landlords, a simple log of repairs by property makes future decisions much easier.
Gas work
Gas fitting is covered by the same state board. If the job involves a gas water heater, range or line, ask whether the person doing it is licensed for gas work as well as plumbing.
